perimenopause, menopause
8 in 10 women experience symptoms of the menopause, and the duration of these symptoms can vary greatly.

1. Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, which can last several years. During this time, fluctuations in hormone levels can trigger a variety of symptoms. Women may experience:

  • Menstrual Cycle Changes: Periods may become irregular, occur less frequently, or change in flow and duration.

  • Vasomotor Symptoms: Hot flushes and night sweats are common, affecting comfort and sleep quality.

  • Mood Changes: Hormonal shifts can lead to increased anxiety, depression, and irritability.

  • Genitourinary Symptoms: Women may notice vaginal dryness, which can affect sexual intimacy and comfort.

  • Musculoskeletal Symptoms: Joint and muscle pain can arise, impacting physical activity and daily routines.

  • Sexual Difficulties: Many women experience a decline in sexual desire or changes in sexual response.

2. The Menopause

The menopause occurs 12 months after the last period, with the average age of 51 years. This stage signifies the biological end of menstruation and fertility.

3. Postmenopause

Postmenopause refers to the years following menopause, where many women may find relief from earlier symptoms. However, some may experience long-term effects related to hormonal changes and should prioritize health and well-being through lifestyle adjustments.

The Menopause Transition

Menopause is a natural and normal stage in a woman's life. It signifies a time when hormonal changes occur, marking a transition towards the conclusion of fertility. This phase encourages us to reflect and prioritise self-care, enabling us to embrace and thrive in the next chapters of our lives.

The menopause transition usually starts when a woman is in her mid-to-late 40s (known as the perimenopause) but it’s important to be aware that some women will start the menopause transition at a younger age than this and some at an older age. The average age for a woman to reach the menopause is 51. Around 5% of women will go through an early menopause, between the age of 40-45, and 1% under the age of 40. This is known as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

There are three stages to the menopause transition:

  • Perimenopause

  • Menopause

  • Postmenopause

Menopause affects all individuals with normally functioning ovaries who reach a certain age. We acknowledge that this group encompasses some transgender men and other gender-diverse individuals; thus, we sometimes use the term "people" instead of "women" to maintain accuracy and inclusivity. However, since much of the existing literature refers to those experiencing menopause as women without addressing how these findings relate to the specific needs of gender-diverse individuals, we also use "women" in some cases to prevent making inappropriate generalizations.
